Historical Financial and Trading Photographs

Friedman Fine Art represents the David R. Phillips collection, which consists of more than 100,000 original negatives of Chicago photography by the best photographers of the 1860s to the 1970s. Included in this collection -- the most extensive collection of historic Chicago photography and vintage Chicago pictures currently available -- is an unequaled selection of financial trading pictures of American trading institutions such as the Chicago Board of Trade.

Some examples of the Chicago images in the collection are illustrated below.

Images of the interiors and exteriors of various financial institutions throughout their history can be seen in Friedman Fine Art's selection of financial trading pictures. The collection also shows the people who worked there, such as floor traders and stock specialists. The collection represents not only Chicago photography but also financial trading pictures from many other institutions, such as the New York Stock Exchange.

The scope and variety of the collection of old financial trading pictures represented by Friedman Fine Art correspond to the photographs' importance to the history of Chicago and of trading and finance. Chicago is where trading of futures for commodities was first established and Chicago remains a major world center of exchanges and trading. Located in Chicago are the Chicago Board of Trade, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (the two merged in 2007 to become the CME Group), the U.S. Futures Exchange, the Chicago Stock Exchange and the Chicago Climate Exchange. This collection of Chicago photography showcases the architecture and interiors of the buildings housing the financial exchanges over more than a century, and the traders throughout the exchanges' history.

No other collection of Chicago photography so comprehensively shows how these financial and trading institutions have evolved. The oldest futures and options exchange in the world, the Chicago Board of Trade was established in 1848 and continues to be a major international commodity exchange (it recently merged with the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and is collectively referred to as the CME Group). Friedman Fine Art's collection shows the Chicago Board of Trade in many of the early buildings that housed the exchange before its current home was built in 1930. The collection of financial trading pictures also includes images of the Chicago Stock Exchange, the Chicago Stock Market, the New York Stock Exchange, Wall Street and others.

This most extensive and detailed collection of financial trading pictures currently available is offered exclusively by Friedman Fine Art. Images include the vintage photographs of Chicago Board of Trade, the Chicago Federal Reserve, the Chicago Stock Exchange, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the New York Stock Exchange and traders in various exchanges.
